The 2012 doomsday prediction is a present-day cultural meme proposing that cataclysmic and apocalyptic events will occur in the year 2012. The forecast is based primarily on what is claimed to be the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which is presented as lasting 5,125 years and as terminating on December 21 or 23, 2012, along with interpretations of assorted legends, scriptures, numerological constructions and prophecies.

A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation rather than an armageddon, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a newer sociopolitical age for the global community. The 2012 doomsday prediction idea has been disseminated in numerous books and TV documentaries, and has spread around the world as an Internet meme through websites and discussion groups. To date, there is no accepted theory or evidence recognized by the scientific community that supports or lends credence to the idea of a doomsday occurring in 2012.

The apocalypse is not scheduled for December 21, 2012, according to NASA. Scientists at the US space agency are taking an unusual swipe at doomsday crackpottery this week in an online campaign designed to address fears fueled by the end of a cycle in the ancient Mayan calendar, a Hollywood movie, and a fresh wave of pseudo-science crackpots. Not to mention Sony’s viral marketing campaign.

“Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012,” NASA states in a new FAQ web page set up for the occasion. “Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists know of no threat associated with 2012.”

The space agency is taking aim at a popular end-of-days scenario given credence on various crank websites that a planet called Nibiru or Planet X will collide with Earth during the 2012 holiday season, wreaking havoc and devastation on an unparalleled scale. The story goes that NASA has been secretly tracking this rogue planet since 1983 but has suppressed all news of its existence across the world in the name of “global security.” NASA says this tale is factually untrue.

Of course, that’s just what you’d expect them to say…

I posted on another site that I think all this "end of the world" stuff means an end to the way we live our lives NOW. That we will begin a new cycle in our existence. Like, maybe people will stop being so mean and nasty to each other, or maybe the ancient space people that's been depicted in the cave drawings and in ancient pictographs will return to show us where we went so wrong. Who knows. Something's got to give, right?
