Having been a social worker, specifically "community organizer" (community organizer in English) in the southern suburbs of Chicago during the 1980s, then a lawyer in civil law at its exit from Harvard, he teaches constitutional law at University of Chicago from 1992 to 2004.

Barack Obama entered politics in 1996 he was elected to the Illinois Senate where he conducts three terms, from 1997 to 2004. He knows failure at his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the House of Representatives in 2000 but received in March 2004 for the Senate of the United States. Barack Obama is distinguished particularly by its early opposition to the war launched by George W. Bush in Iraq and the speech he delivered in July 2004 during the Democratic convention that means John Kerry as presidential candidate, providing noticed that he became known for the first time nationally.

Elected senator in November 2004, he declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States February 10, 2007 in Springfield. He won the primaries against Hillary Clinton is officially nominated as a candidate at a convention of his party in Denver, August 27, 2008.

After winning with 52.9% of the vote and 365 electoral votes, November 4, 2008, presidential election against Republican John McCain, Barack Obama takes office January 20, 2009.

His presidency comes at a time of war in Iraq, war in Afghanistan, crisis in the Middle East, major recession in the U.S. economy and financial crisis and global economic conditions.
