Either days were shorter in those days or, [this is what I believe] humans were closer to being perfect in body than we are today. They did have a free will, mind you.

The tent [tarbancle] was housing the Ark of The Covenant before David's son Solomon had build a temple for God. That covenant was broken by Israelites when they agreed to put Jesus to death. They were in a poor spiritual state and didn't recognize that Jesus was their Messiah [anointed one, God's son]. For that reason, they were not under God's protection as a nation that belonged to him ever since.
