Abstract

Quora: Why doesn't Google Maps show the polar ice caps?

A: "Associate Professor of Anthropology (2001–present)Author
How much, given that the north pole is all ice and not a land mass, would the oceans be lowered if the arctic ice pack melted and nothing else changed?

Arctic sea ice melting won't have any effect on sea levels.

It's the ice on land in Greenland and Antarctica that will cause sea level rise when it melts.

As an experiment, put some ice in a glass, and then fill it right up to the rim with water. Leave it to sit for a while, until the ice melts. You will notice that the melted ice doesn’t cause the water to overflow.

That’s the small-scale equivalent of sea ice melting.

The rim of the glass represents the current shoreline, and the homes of around half of the world’s population. If all of the sea ice melts, but none of the land glaciers do, the coasts are going to be just fine. The icebergs displace water, but when they melt, they end up taking up as much space as they took when they were frozen (not quite, but close enough).

Now that all of the ice in your glass is fully melted, and the water is right up to the brim of the glass, add ten more ice cubes, one representing Greenland, northern Canada, and northern Eurasia, and the other nine representing the glaciers of Antarctica.

I recommend having a sponge or mop ready when you do this. Everybody on the rim of the glass is either going to drown or move to whatever inland areas are available.

If you think we have a challenge with migrants now, just wait until the world looks like this:"

Climate change = hotter Summers + colder Winters (??) what's going on here? If glaciers melt in Summer, won't they refreeze again in Winter? Why then this doomsday scenario to frighten the population? I'm finding the Winters longer and colder and Summers have become shorter (come later and leave earlier) The sun is misbehaving, true its become a huge white disk now (I wonder why?) Are we in for a sun shutting down/dying? The global flooding may happen (it happened before many times in Earth's early history) but perhaps not as dramatic and final as we are told, missa thinks;)

Personally, I'd like some "visual proof" and not just a scientists' word for it that Arctic is just a mass of sea ice (hence it isn't showing on 'google maps'), like a drone or, a submersible 'unshopped' image;)
