[B]Once again, another great example of Thomas Cole's painting technique.
The image appears as if it were taken straight out of a scene from a medieval Scottish loch (think Loch Ness monster area) just as a thunderstorm has spent its fill of rain upon the countryside.
Again, a nice juxtaposition of light and dark tones. Entire left side of the painting is composed of light, while the right side is of darkness / gloom.
If one were to really project a meaning upon the image or an attempt at interpreting it, I think that the artist was depicting the balance between light (i.e. good / pleasantness) with darkness (i.e. evil / despair & gloom).
Somewhat of a different take on the asian Yin Yang (black + white) symbol, albeit done with a nature theme.
Thanks for the upload.
Take care,

Thank you for the history on this one Sweetwitchy! The play of light that circles the setting draws you in and then makes you look around in wonder. Masterful. Great upload.
