*Als weltliche Volkssitte ist das Osterfeuer seit 1559 bezeugt, geht aber auf vorchristliche Traditionen zurück, die sich an so genannten Brandopferplätzen als Gruben zeigen. Die 1906 erstmalig erkannten Plätze sind ein Phänomen der jüngeren Bronze- und der Eisenzeit. Sie besitzen gemeinsame, ihre Lage betreffende Attribute: exponierte Lage im Gelände, auf Höhenzügen oder Kuppen, Nähe zum Wasser, jedoch nicht zu Wohnplätzen.Die größte Ansammlung liegt in Dänemark, bei Rønnige Søgard auf Fünen, wo über 300 von vermutlich 500 Feuerstellen ausgegraben wurden.
