Dresden evolved into one of Germany\\'s most beautiful cities after it became the residence of the Wettins, rulers of Saxony for over 800 years. In the 18th century the city was one of Europe\\'s most important cultural centers with many magnificent buildings like the Semper Opera House and Zwinger.
On the night of February 13, 1945 allied fire bombings destroyed the historical center of Dresden. After more than 50 years most of the landmarks have been rebuilt, just in time for the city\\'s 800 year anniversary in 2006.
