By painting a model posed on a glass floor that he had installed in his studio, Dali achieves a strangely foreshortened body for the Christ figure in this painting. Dali toys with Christian symbolism; his wife, Gala, is the Virgin Mary and he reverses the tranditional placement of the figures, with Mary at the top of the composition and Christ seeming to fall even as he ascends. I have never studied art history...I have always just thought you either liked it or not...never any thought to the reason for the painting....I am going to go to the library and look around, its time I found out something about this "stuff" I love. Thank you for opening my sixty six year old eyes to this!!
