Absinthe is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74% ABV) beverage. It is an anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, commonly referred to as "grande wormwood". Absinthe traditionally has a natural green color but can also be colorless. It is commonly referred to in historical literature as la fee verte (the Green Fairy), because of the green myst that rises off the liquid.
It is generally very sweet and easy to drink because it doesn't have strong alcohol flavor, thought the actual alcohol content is nearly 2x times that of vodka! The beverage was a popular favorite among artists and poets, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Aleister Crowley, Alfred Jarry & Charles Baudelaire in 19th century Paris. Oscar Wilde was also known to be fond of the drink and equally known for his wild hallucinations caused from it. Absinthe has quite strong hallucinogenic properties, and as a result the drink is officially outlawed in most countries in the world including the U.S. except in specialty stores, where it it sold containing a certain alchohol content the remains within the legal limit.
