François Edouard PICOT 1827
Wallpaper Description:
The decoration of the ceilings of the Musée Charles X Paris, 1786 – Paris, 1868. In 1826, the architect Fontaine designed nine rooms on the first floor of the south wing of the Cour Carrée to display the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, medieval, and Renaissance collections. They were inaugurated in 1827 by Charles X. To decorate the rooms, ceilings were commissioned from the best artists of the period. The decorative scheme was completed by the coves and painted bas-reliefs at the tops of the walls below the cornice. The subjects were inspired by the collections exhibited in the rooms. The painted ceilings of the first four rooms evoked Homer, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, while those in the four following rooms illustrate Egypt and Renaissance architecture in Rome, and pay tribute to Charles X.
